Breaking Bread with Jesus. . . 4/30/23

Luke 9:10-17, NLT

When the apostles returned, they told Jesus everything they had done. Then he slipped quietly away with them toward the town of Bethsaida. But the crowds found out where he was going and they followed him. He welcomed them and taught them about the kingdom of God, and he healed those who were sick.

Late in the afternoon, the twelve disciples came to him and said, “Send the crowds away to the nearby villages and farms so they can find food and lodging for the night. There is nothing to eat here in this remote place.”

But Jesus said, “You feed them.”

“But we only have five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. “Or are you expecting us to go and buy enough food for this whole crowd?” For there were about 5,000 men there.

Jesus replied, “Tell them to sit down in groups of about fifty each.” So the people all sat down. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them. Then breaking the loaves into pieces, he kept giving the bread and fish to the disciples so they could distribute it to the people. They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers!

1. The disciples come back.
Jesus LISTENS and wants to hear about what his disciples have been up to.

Prayer of Examen

Prayerfully reflect on your day.
Start in the morning and think through ‘til the end.
Ask Jesus to show you where he was present with you in the moment.

Psalm 116:1-2, NLT

I love the LORD because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!

2. The crowd shows up. What does Jesus do?

  1. He WELCOMES them.
  2. He TEACHES them about the kingdom of God.
  3. He HEALS the sick.

Luke 9:12-14.
3. This is an IMPOSSIBLE situation.

  1. They are in a remote place not close to people’s homes.
  2. They have only 5 loaves and two fish.
  3. There is no way they have enough money to buy food for all these people.

Jesus replied, “Tell them to sit down in groups of about 50 each.” So the all people sat down. Vs. 14-17

For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. One the night he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus TOOK some BREAD, and GAVE THANKS to God for it. Then he BROKE it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is GIVEN for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people – an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this inremembrance of me as often as you drink it.”

Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:
My servants will eat, but you will starve.
My servants will drink, but you will be thirsty.
My servants will rejoice, but you will be sad and ashamed.
My servants will be glad, but you will cry in sorrow and despair.

He rained down manna for them to eat; He gave them bread from heaven. They ate the food of angels!
God gave them all they could hold.

Let us be glad and rejoice, and let us give honor to him.
For the time has come for the wedding feast of the Lamb,
And his bride has prepared herself.
She has been given the finest of pure white linen to wear.
For the fine linen represents the good deeds of God’s holy people.
